When talking about formative stylists in modern jazz, one thing should definitely not be missing: Jan Garbarek tackled the archaic, melancholy melodies of Nordic folklore with an ascetic aestheticism and thus quickly found an unmistakable musical language. Influenced at a young age by John Coltrane, he played in Keith Jarrett’s European quartet from 1974 to 1979, before he also absorbed new musical influences through numerous encounters with musicians from other cultures, be it in cooperation with Egberto Gismonti or Anouar Brahem or currently with the hot-blooded Rhythm juggler Trilok Gurtu. His anthemic recordings and performances with the Hilliard Ensemble, which are celebrated around the world, will not be forgotten.
