The iconic Sami-Norwegian artist and activist Mari Boine is something of a living legend from Norway and is known as one of the country’s most groundbreaking musical pioneers. On 15 November 2024, she will be playing with her band at Volkshaus Zurich!
Musically, she is difficult to categorise, but the term world music in the broadest sense probably describes her best. Her music is steeped in Sami roots (Joik) and shamanistic beats combined with jazz, rock and electronic sounds.
Mari Boine has released 14 albums since her career debut in the early 80s. On her world tours she has collaborated with jazz greats such as Jan Garbarek and Bugge Wesseltoft.
Her groundbreaking album “Gula Gula” (1990) earned her the first of four Spellemannprisen (Norway’s Grammy Awards). In the same year, she collaborated with Peter Gabriel on the impressive BBC documentary “One World One Voice” and the album of the same name.
Over the course of her career, Mari Boine has received numerous other awards, including the Knight 1st Class of the Order of St Olav for her versatile artistic work and the Nordic Council Music Prize.
Her latest studio albums are AMAME (September 2023) and See The Woman (2017), her first album in English, a tribute to indigenous poets of different nationalities.
The album AMAMAE, released together with another Norwegian musical world star, pianist Bugge Wesseltoft, was fantastically well received and was labelled one of the strongest of the year by critics.
Mari Boine impressively manages to find something completely new in herself than anything we have heard from her before. We can look forward to an evening with one of Norway’s strongest voices together with her fabulous band.
In addition, Mari Boine has already completed another new album, ALVA, which will be released in 2024.
